The National Forensic Mental Health Service, Portrane, was recently shortlisted for the Irish Construction Excellence Awards in the 'Architectural Design Excellence – Project Value Over €10m' category.

The National Forensic Mental Health Service, Portrane, was announced on Friday as the winner of the ‘Architectural Design Excellence – Project Value Over €10m’ Award at the Irish Construction Excellence Awards. The NFMHS was designed in association with Medical Architecture and in close collaboration with the HSE Estates Office, with 130 single patient bedrooms in small wards around shared indoor and outdoor spaces. The carefully considered design caters to people with opposite needs, balancing the needs of hypersensitive service-users and people who need additional stimulation. The NFMHS has been designed to provide a safe, secure, and healing environment that enhances service user recovery, with buildings strategically placed to optimise the existing topology, mature woodland setting, and coastal views. This emphasis on providing the best care and an optimised healing environment is balanced with the high security requirements of the project.

On the announcement of the Award, Kevin Bates, Director, who leads our healthcare sector, said:

‘‘We are delighted to win this award on behalf of the many contractors and consultants who contributed so much. We must also acknowledge the visionary role played by the HSE in creating this new landmark facility which positions Ireland’s forensic mental health services as world-leading. The design maximises the therapeutic value of landscape in such a secure setting with many tangible benefits for patients and staff now being acknowledged’’.

Thank you to the ICE Awards for this recognition of the excellence achieved at the NFMHS.

The awards ceremony, which took place in Dublin’s Convention Centre, was attended by Kevin Bates, Director, and Karl Burton, Associate.
