Refurbishment and expansion of one of Ireland’s Leading Private Emergency Departments, facilitating rapid access to specialist emergency teams and integration into the wider hospital.
The initial brief for this project was to create a series of feasibility studies to determine the optimal design for expanding the Emergency Facilities in the MPN’s existing Hospital at Mahon Point. It was critical that this rapidly growing service should be fully integrated with all our other hospital services, such as diagnostics, consultation with other specialists, or hospital admission.
The final strategy involved several major moves within the Hospital Campus, including:
STW, in close collaboration with the Hospital, set out a detailed phasing strategy and programme of works that could be delivered while keeping all existing services operational.
The key challenges for this project were working within a busy live hospital setting and designing high standard healthcare environments in what is essentially and office development. The constraints on space for services and complex tie ins to existing shafts and risers required very detailed coordination between the designers, contractors and hospital FM Team.
The final design brings the ED capacity to 10 beds. Comprising of 4 general bays, 3 general treatment rooms, 2 cardiac care bays and an isolation suite, along with 2 triage rooms and support spaces for staff. It also delivers enhanced recovery areas for ICU and a new Outpatient Department. Its new location allows for a much brighter and efficient layout that maximises natural light and visibility between staff and patient.
The patient area was designed to allow all the beds to be observed from a large centrally located staff base. The bed spaces are located along the external façade, maximising daylight, and taking full advantage of expansive views over Cork City. The department is a calming space flooded with daylight.
