Scott Tallon Walker Architects were appointed as Lead Technical Advisor by University College London Hospital (UCLH) for the Design & Build of this state-of-the-art building – one of the largest specialist centres for the treatment of conditions relating to the head and neck. The hospital is situated within a conservation area, along the eastern end of Huntley Street, and adjacent to the Gordon Mansions and Capper Street.
Architecture
The scheme reflects close collaboration between the Design Team, the client, subcontractors, planning and heritage officers at the London Borough of Camden.
Opened in 2019, the Pilbrow & Partners design sensitively responds to the neighbouring Victorian architectural heritage while providing suitable modern accommodation to provide outpatients with world-leading, evidence-based care.
Circulation and shared waiting spaces are placed along the facade, which features floor-to-ceiling windows in wide bays within pre-cast concrete bands, perforated masonry screens, and traditional handmade red brick. Patients and staff have generous views to the outside with natural daylight flooding the interiors.
Reductions in construction time and on-site health and safety risks were achieved through a prefabrication process designed with the contractor, also ensuring greater quality and finish. Overheating and energy consumption were also reduced through the implementation of efficient new service systems, creating a high-performance clinical building.
