The new facility brings TUH’s capacity up to 21 beds. All new single occupancy rooms were designed to the latest HBN/ HTM standards and the project involved complex tie ins and adjacencies to the existing hospital on multiple levels which remained live throughout. 

All rooms were designed to be completely visible from the centrally located nurse’s station through a double set of automatic interlinked hermetic glass sliding doors. Bedrooms were also visually connected to each other through a series of large internal screens with interstitial blind controls in each room. This allowed for enhanced passive surveillance of the patients. 

Staff and patient flow was designed through medical planning to ensure the areas worked efficiently and to ensure the ICCU wards functioned without interference of support services. Staff offices, family rooms, changing areas, large bulk storage, training facilities & conference rooms were included to both aid and support the staff so that they could deliver more effective care for the patient. 


While not part of the initial brief STW developed the design to include for highly infectious patients, bariatric patients as well as a review of acoustics to ensure patient comfort. Break out spaces for staff and visitors were provided through a series of rooftop terraces which incorporated green roofs to benefit the care of the patient but also provide a visual therapeutic environment from the patient’s bed.

The improved building fabric performance utilised in conjunction with natural ventilation strategy significantly where applicable reduces Heating Energy. The Photovoltaic panels utilised in conjunction with high efficiency condensing gas boilers were predicted to provide a considerable reduction to building energy demand. The overall energy improvement for the building was determined to achieve a reduction of 53% below Notional benchmark, which equates to an A3 BER rating as indicated.
