The themes of both are closely interlinked – ‘Design for Strength’ being this year’s World Architecture Day theme and this year’s World Habitat Day spotlighting urban crisis response.
Designing our built environment sustainably and with resilience and adaptability as a core principle will only increase in importance in the coming years. Using nature-based solutions and protecting biodiversity will help mitigate climate change and help our built environments and urban centres withstand its effects.
Earlier this year, the Irish Green Building Council published two Irish case studies on 'Biodiversity and the Built Environment', one of which was on the National Forensic Mental Health Service in Portrane, designed by Scott Tallon Walker Architects in association with Medical Architecture for our client, the Health Service Executive. These principles are also being applied in the ‘Grow College Green’ project, a transformational urban design project to revitalise Dublin’s historic core - the design of which is being led by Scott Tallon Walker Architects in partnership with OKRA landscape architects, for Dublin City Council and the National Transport Authority. A core pillar of the vision for the project is that the space should support Dublin as a resilient and healthy city into the future. The proposal prioritises sustainability, encompassing nature-based solutions, enhancing storm-water management and wind-mitigation measures, increasing biodiversity, and improving air quality.
