Scott Tallon Walker’s Christmas Card Tradition

For five decades, STW has partnered with leading Irish artists to create unique Christmas card designs that reflect its commitment to the arts

At Scott Tallon Walker (STW), we have a longstanding legacy in design, innovation, and creativity, and, for almost 50 years, we have collaborated with leading Irish artists to create a unique Christmas card every year which reflects our design legacy and our commitment to the arts.

The STW Christmas Card tradition started in 1975 when we asked Patrick Scott, one of the first exponents of pure abstraction in Irish art and who, at the time, was an STW architect, to create a unique card that could be sent out to friends of the firm. Thereafter Patrick Scott created a Christmas card each year for the next thirty-nine years up until 2012.

Following his sad passing in 2014, we decided to commission a new Irish artist to create a new Christmas card as a tribute to Patrick Scott's legacy, reflecting the significant contribution to the development of modernist design in Ireland. Since then, the cards portrayed the remarkable works of Sarah Walker, an established Cork contemporary artist, and Richard Gorman, an internationally recognised abstract artist. This year marks the final card in Richard Gorman’s series and will feature a series of six cards that reflect his abstract designs that his internationally renowned for. For 2023, STW will partner with a new artist to bring a fresh perspective and further creativity to this almost 50-year tradition.

“We believe that our Christmas cards are unique and, as a leading Irish-based design practice, we are very proud of them. It reflects our commitment to creativity and design, which are our core architectural principles and are reflected in the work we do for our clients all over the world. We would like to thank Richard for his treasured contribution and look forward to revealing our next selected artists in the new year for Christmas 2023.”
