The feature explores the building’s response to Eccles Street’s topography, scale, and the history of the area, and how the Rock Wing establishes a civic presence while remaining grounded in its immediate context. Set back behind a public threshold garden, the new wing forms a dialogue with the original hospital to the west and St George’s Church to the east, using proportion, verticality, and materiality to anchor the new entrance within the evolving campus.
Delivered during the COVID-19 pandemic under accelerated timelines, the project also demonstrates how Modern Methods of Construction (MMC), modularisation, and repetition can support both speed and architectural quality. The disciplined use of a single structural bay, adaptable façade panels, and carefully calibrated massing allowed the building to meet urgent healthcare needs while respecting its conservation-area setting.
Beyond an emergency response, the Rock Wing is part of a long-term urban and campus strategy, which STW has been working on in collaboration with the Mater for decades, contributing to a future continuous frontage along Eccles Street and a coherent public realm at the heart of the hospital.
The success of the project lies in the close collaboration between the practice, our client, and the wider project team, and in engaging with end-users, stakeholders, and the local community throughout the design process, resulting in a building which provides dignity in care for patients and visitors and performing for staff now and in the years to come.
