Karl Burton, Scott Tallon Walker Architects, along with Ruairi Reeves, Medical Architecture, presented a talk at the European Healthcare Design Conference on the new National Forensic Mental Hospital, Dublin and how our design of the Hospital promotes health outcomes and improves quality of life for those suffering from mental health issues. The talk focused on transforming mental health through design, with the hospital representing a step-change in mental health care. Key highlights of the talk included:

  • the therapeutic value of access to nature
  • the creation of a sense of community and a therapeutic and normalised environment in a large, highly secure hospital
  • the benefits of flexibility and adaptability in providing long-term resilience
  • how high-quality workplace design can help retain staff

A stimulating Q&A session took place following the talk, with discussions around moving forward in mental healthcare design.

The Hospital was awarded Project of the Year – New Build International and Outside Space of the Year at the Design in Mental Health Awards, which took place on Wednesday 7th June.
