If we are serious about reaching net zero, the way we transform our existing buildings matters. A considered fabric-first approach, combined with upgrades to building services, can deliver significant energy savings and bring existing buildings close to the performance of well-designed new developments.
However; the case for reuse goes beyond energy efficiency. Retaining existing structures avoids the significant embodied carbon associated with new construction, while reimagining what is already there can create new value, improve wellbeing and strengthen the character of our buildings and cities.
Last week was World Green Building Week, and this year's theme #BuildItReady, focussed on making buildings more resilient, efficient and ready for future opportunities.
Existing buildings are not simply alternatives to new construction.
In many cases, they are better.
