This year's festival is centred around ‘Unseen’ Architecture, spotlighting the often imperceptible factors that shape space and influence our daily lives.
Last Wednesday 1st October, colleagues from our Galway studio, Paul Mannion and Sawsan Bassalat, gave a short presentation on Sandy Quarter - a c.20-acre site near Galway city centre - followed by an exploratory walk of the area. The Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland (RIAI) was commissioned by The Land Development Agency to conduct Design Reviews of the site in 2020. Paul was one of five RIAI architects chosen to conduct the Review and propose a vision and ideas for the Quarter.
On Tuesday 7th October, Project Director Philip Jackson took part in a panel discussion on the work done to date to progress the Galway Charter and plot the course for the city into the future. The Charter has been co-created by The Academy of Urbanism (AoU), the RIAI, and Comhairle Cathrach na Gaillimhe / Galway City Council. I was in Galway this afternoon for a roundtable discussion on the progress made on delivering the Greater Galway Charter and what the road ahead might look like for the city.
Central to the discussion was the question of how Galway can plan for an expansion in population, maintaining and building a vibrant city, and intensifying development while creating neighbourhoods with local services and amenities and sustainable transport links to the historic core. Philip spoke briefly on the masterplan for Galway Harbour which proposes the extension of the city centre as far as the port. The Land Development Agency plan to build out the first piece of this masterplan with a housing development along Loch Atalia.
