The Challenge

The design brief for the new private hospital on the St. Vincent’s University Hospital campus called for a centre of excellence unrivalled in private healthcare in Ireland, not only in the model of care but also in the built environment.

The facility was commissioned to replace the existing 40 year old St. Vincent’s Private Hospital. The co location of private and public medical facilities on the one campus forms part  of the government health strategy

The Building

The principal facilities in the hospital are four operating theatres and support areas a Day Surgery Suite including  Endoscopy rooms and day theatre, HDU, minor injuries unit, diagnostic imaging, private consultant rooms, allied health, laboratories, pharmacy; 30 day beds and 230 inpatient beds. The majority of bedrooms are single rooms with  ensuite bathrooms designed to HBN0401. The layout of the wards maximises the opportunities for views to Dublin Bay and the Dublin mountains. The wards are arranged on five floors above a central atrium which is the central way finding device in the planning. Public facilities like a restaurant and coffee shop are located off the atrium at ground level. A wing to the side of the main building accommodates the theatres and administration functions.

The Details

The building has been designed with sustainable architecture and technologies to the fore and was nominated in the 2008 Irish Green Awards for our  approach to green building design in a healthcare environment
