The Challenge

The Pharmacy and Genetics building was part of the “East End” development masterplanned and designed by the practice. This project involved 11,000m2 of complex laboratories built on a tight urban site, next to the back of the Georgian houses on Westland Row, all of which, including a pub, were listed structures. 

The Building

A glazed student street runs at the back of the houses which are linked at all levels to the new buildings. The houses are reused as office spaces which require minimal servicing. The lower levels of the new building contain large undergraduate teaching labs while the upper floors are bisected by an atrium space which brings air and light to the heart of the research facilities overhead.  

The Details

The Genetics building incorporated a significant collection of Pomodoro paintings gifted by Prof. George Dawson (the founder of the Genetics department) and hung back to back, suspended in the atrium, and a commissioned sculpture by Brian King based on the double helix form.
